I was able to get today off to do some bow hunting and pheasant hunting. I leave for Denver on Sunday, so I wanted to get an extra day of hunting in before my trip. I sat in James' Ladder stand on the south side for the very first time. This has been the "hot stand" over the last week. Danny has seen five deer in/around over the last few days. The weather was very nice with a light breeze from the south and cooler temperatures. Unfortunately, I sat until 10:30 and never saw a deer. I decided to head back to the quarry and drive to the north side and sit in the Sandbox stand for the lunch hour. While driving the field road to the north side, I came upon a 6 point buck, just about to head into the woods by the Platform Stand in the first finger. I got pretty close to him before he realized there was a vehicle behind him. Thinking this was a good sign the deer were moving, I quickly parked my vehicle and scampered to the Sandbox. The area of the Sandbox seems to be a meeting place for deer. There are many fresh tracks in the sand and huge, I mean HUGE, scrapes all over the place. Due to the sandy soil, the scrapes are deep holes and with a few of them more than four feet in diameter! Even with all of the positive sign, I never saw a deer. On my way out, I found a new hang on stand that Danny's Uncle Bill just recently put up overlooking two of the big scrapes.
Total deer sightings: 3
Total hunting hours: 43
