Regular Gun Season

Well, it was a pretty slow gun deer season this year. Only one deer was harvested at "The Land". Mike shot a pretty nice 10-pointer. We really need to invest some time in the off season clearing up spots in the woods and planting some food plots. We need to make the property more attractive for the deer to stay around in.

Luckily we have two more gun deer seasons before it is all said and done. Maybe we'll bag one or two more so there can be meat on the table.

Saturday Morning Hunt

Temp: 48 Wind: Calm Weather: Sunny, Partly Cloudy

In the stand by 5:30am. Hunted until just after 8am. No signs of whitetail deer, at all. Corn is starting to be combined; however, the moisture is too high so they have halted finishing for now. They hope to be done sometime this week. They have seen a few deer while combining.

Word in Monkey-town is that, possibly, the big guy was arrowed through its hind leg(s) on Sylvan's late in the day on Friday, but not found as of this morning.

Only a few new pics on the camera. Three pics of doe and one of one of the big guys.

Until next time,

James

Update Bow Hunting (Danny)

Sorry that i have not updated the blog with my hunts. I have had a good couple of hunting weeks. The best was the day before Halloween when i saw four bucks within ten minutes. One of the bucks was a Big Boy, too bad i was walking when i saw him. I have had many small bucks underneath my stand but still trying to save the buck tag.
Tonight driving past the land (11:30pm) i saw the tall ten pointer and twelve pointer chasing two does in the grassy field between jasons swamp stand and exeter crossing which is actually sylvans land. I will be hunting tomorrow morning and probably will start in the swamp........

Bow Hunting and Work on the Cabin

I sat in the bow stand for a couple of hours on Saturday morning but didn't see anything. I had something moving around my stand before sun light, but never got a glimpse. I did hear three separate rooster pheasants making noise on the south side. Gus and Joey will have to get in there to flush them out.

There are deer around there as my motion camera shows. We just need to see them in our sights.

On Sunday I did some work on the cabin. I built a set of steps leading to the front door, caulked around the front door, and filled in some gravel on the field road going above the quarry so that the renters can get in and out of the field with one less bump.

Let's hope they get the corn off soon so that the deer have one less place to hide!

Bow Hunting(Jason) - Wednesday 11/4/2009

Temperature:  38 degrees at 5:30 am / 53 degrees at 1:00 pm
Wind:  S variable

I was able to get today off to do some bow hunting and pheasant hunting.  I leave for Denver on Sunday, so I wanted to get an extra day of hunting in before my trip.  I sat in James' Ladder stand on the south side for the very first time.  This has been the "hot stand" over the last week.  Danny has seen five deer in/around over the last few days.  The weather was very nice with a light breeze from the south and cooler temperatures.  Unfortunately, I sat until 10:30 and never saw a deer.  I decided to head back to the quarry and drive to the north side and sit in the Sandbox stand for the lunch hour.  While driving the field road to the north side, I came upon a 6 point buck, just about to head into the woods by the Platform Stand in the first finger.  I got pretty close to him before he realized there was a vehicle behind him.  Thinking this was a good sign the deer were moving, I quickly parked my vehicle and scampered to the Sandbox.  The area of the Sandbox seems to be a meeting place for deer.  There are many fresh tracks in the sand and huge, I mean HUGE, scrapes all over the place.  Due to the sandy soil, the scrapes are deep holes and with a few of them more than four feet in diameter!  Even with all of the positive sign, I never saw a deer.  On my way out, I found a new hang on stand that Danny's Uncle Bill just recently put up overlooking two of the big scrapes.

Total deer sightings: 3
Total hunting hours: 43

Bow Hunting (Danny and Jason) - Saturday 10/31/09

Temperature:  42 degrees at 2:30 / 37 degrees at 6:00 pm
Wind:  N/NW strong!!

Danny and I decided to meet up at the quarry for a "Halloween bow hunt".  We were both excited as October 31st usually kicks off "prime time" bow hunting when the bucks and the does prepare to breed.  Because of the wind, I decided to sit in my ladder stand in the south swamp.  With the wind blowing strongly in my face, there was no way deer would catch my scent.  Danny decided to hide from the wind in his cedar stand in the south woods.  Although the wind was strong, it was a beautiful night.  We thought for sure the deer would be moving, but we both went without seeing a deer.

Total deer sightings: 2
Total hunting hours: 35.5

Bow Hunting (Jason) - Monday 10/26/09

Temperature:  42 degrees at 6:30 / 48 degrees at 9:00 am
Wind: Calm w/rain

I just returned from a pheasant hunting trip this past weekend, so I took an extra day off to do some bow hunting.  Unfortunately the weather didn't really want to cooperate.  Temperatures were fairly comfortable, however it rained pretty steadily all morning.  I decided to sit in Baker's Stand on the south side.  I didn't have any encounters with deer, however I did find 5 fresh ground scrapes along the wood line that goes to James' Ladder stand.  This was a great sign that the pre-rut has started up.

Total deer sightings: 2
Total hunting hours: 32.0
